SVHS alums produce CD of “porch fusion” tunes
We made it to a local private music festival over the weekend that had the likes of Hobo Jungle, The Black Point String Band and Gale Mead, among others performing. To me, when Grace Slick was in her prime, she is easily ranked as one of the top five female rock vocalists of all time. After one upping Joni Mitchell on her CD, Gale took yet another legendary female vocalist and roughed her up a bit with an acoustic version of White Rabbit that sent chills down your spine, it was that good. Her show last week at Copia earned her two standing ovations. Occasionally you come across a singer/performer who has such incredible potential that it’s hard to look past. Gale is one of those people. Jayme Bechtal and his latest flame Motogruv moves to the Battle of the Bands finals this Saturday night at the Oakland Metro. This is the regional competition with bands from all around the bay and the Sacramento area as well. Smokin’ Joe and The Smokin’ Jaze are going to be real busy this Saturday as well with two shows. The first will be at The Dream Machine studios in Santa Rosa where E. Z. Kewl will be sharing the bill. Then the Jaze are off to the Yountville Community Hall where they will be doing a benefit for Yountville youth baseball. Maybe Joe’s Yankees can pick up a player or two there. They will also have a celebrity sitting in on drums. Roy Blumenfeld of The Blues Project fame. Show starts at 8:30.
CD Review: Jaydub and Dino – Porchgroove. Guitarists Jaydub (Jeff Falconer) and Dino (Dennis Cordellos) have put together a great CD of what they call “Porch Fusion.” Seasoned musical veterans, each with well over 30 years of paying dues, this compilation was put together with fun in mind and it really shows. Jeff and Dino had similar musical paths that led them to where they are now. Having gone to Sonoma Valley High together and after playing in the band Maurice Bleu, they parted ways and ended up playing the club circuits on each coast, Dennis with Pacific Coast Highway and Jeff back East with Seymour Light among many others. Making their way back to Sonoma Valley many years ago, they’ve each spent time guest spotting on each other’s CDs. This time they just decided to finally put down all those songs and ditties they’ve been jamming to over the years. Dennis is an accomplished jazz player, among other styles, and Jeff is a finger-picking monster with a lot to say vocally and the CD truly reflects the feel of two guys sitting on the porch jamming, hence the CD title. “Darlin’ Look My Way”, “Moonlight” and the instrumental “Red Sky Serenade” are some of our favorites but the entire CD is an easy listen. Being the low-key guys they are, they will be having a “Non CD release party” tonight at Murphys, although I’m sure you can acquire one at the show. Tonight on the Big Show we’ll be doing our pre-recorded show as we’re still hoping for that miracle ticket to see Robert Cray.
