A flock of color

Posted on July 19, 2017 by Sonoma Valley Sun

unnamed-4A temporary art installation created and documented by Thomas Jackson, an award-winning fine art photographer in the North Bay, creates of barrage of color and motion on Cougar Mountain at Sears Point.

Jackson secured permission for the two-day project from the Sonoma Land Trust, to build and photograph a sculpture on location depicting artificial objects that mimic swarming behaviors found in nature.

“I started by building two off-camera structures resembling volleyball nets, between which I suspended about 350 large, colored balls,” he explained. “There were a few tense moments when I thought the whole contraption was going to come tumbling down, but by the time the golden hour rolled around and it was time to take the picture, the conditions were ideal. The last rays of sun were glinting off the distant San Francisco skyline, the coyotes were yipping and I couldn’t think of a lovelier way to have spent a day.”

After the shot, Jackson removed all traces of his presence and the project.
